About The Artist

My name is Ray Peña, and I have been producing quality acrylic butterfly cases for the past 19 years. I was taught the process by the very knowledgeable Mr. Alfred (William) “Bill” Parke, when I was barely 18. I studied under Mr. Parke from early 1992 through late 1994. I have learned many lessons from Mr. Parke, in the study of Lepidoptera and in the study of life. I earned a Bachelors of Architecture in 2004, and as a result of my training in design, my butterfly cases are drastically different from any others out there today.  In 2006 I became a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional.

Although I have altered the process considerably, the essence and quality of the hand produced case remains unchanged. Each butterfly is carefully selected from A1 specimens and obtained from ecologically sustainable ranches or farms from around the world.

In order to do this, the specimens must be from short-lived species (not migratory species) and are not taken from wild/natural populations. The life span of a butterfly can vary from a few days (those that emerge without mouth parts and are unable to eat or drink) to a few weeks, with the average being around 14 days.
